April 13th Meeting Minutes
PROPOSAL: Community Council as an excused absence for athletics.
1. Council blog
· Is this the communicator’s job? Maybe, not necessarily
· How often would the blogger have to revise the blog? Couple times a week
· Rules for blog: no swear, no names
· Email Heather (hparkhurst@anesu.org) if interested
2. Athletic/Council participation
· Mary’s points
a) Community Council is already counted as an excused absence.
b) Missing a practice for any reason is going to affect playing time. That can’t change
c) Sports have a hidden curriculum of trying to teach commitment
d) After school time is extremely valuable
e) Practice is like a coaches classroom
f) It’s not equitable to those who are practicing that someone else misses practice for Council
g) Practice time can’t be adjusted
h) Clarification: you don’t have to be at the whole practice to be able to start: that is at the coach’s discretion.
i) In some situations it is possible that a student wouldn’t be at practice until the end of the week
· What defines an excused absence? Would work be considered an excused absence? What about musical practice like a piano lesson?
· Only 1/3 to 1/6 of practice time each week is missed for Council meetings.
· It will affect the relationship amongst the players
· If a student is on the Council and an athletic team, he or she should not expect to get full playing time.
· Sometimes it is necessary to make choices
· We don’t want to exclude athletes from being on the Council (more than half of the students on the Council also play at least one sport)
· Students should be communicating with coaches about missing practice for Council meetings
· Clarification: are there other consequences for excused absences? Coach’s decision
